How are Residential Supportive Living Homes funded?  Can I afford a placement for my loved one?

Residential Supportive Living Homes for adults with autism and developmental disabilities can be funded from multiple sources:

1) Medicaid Funding-Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Waiver: pays towards things like residential supports, 24-hour residential staffing, nursing, residential habilitation, behavioral supports, employment supports, community participation, transportation, assistive technology, case management and other covered services.  Medicaid does not fund room and board.

2) NH State Funding:  Supplemental funds are available through the Department of Health and Human Services, specifically the Bureau of Developmental Services, for services not fully covered by Medicaid.

3) Participant Contributions:  Residents contribute part of their Social Security Administration disability benefits (SSI or SSDI), pensions or employment income (if applicable) towards room and board fees.

4) Private/Community Funding:  Some families pay privately for their loved one; grants may be available for additional funding; non-tax deductible donations are accepted.

New Hampshire has 10 designated Area Agencies that contract with the state's Bureau of Developmental Services (BDS) to coordinate and fund services for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. Each agency serves a defined geographic region and authorizes Medicaid waiver services, including residential group home placements.
